PRESS RELEASE

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026: Every Action Counts, Every Degree Matters.
June 5, 2026
The Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) joins the global community in commemorating World Environment Day (WED) 2026, a day dedicated to raising awareness and inspiring action towards protecting our planet and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
This year’s observance comes at a critical moment in human history. The planet neither argues nor negotiates; it simply sends unmistakable signals. Rising sea levels, raging wildfires, extreme heatwaves, prolonged droughts, devastating floods, and rapidly melting glaciers all point to one undeniable reality; our climate is changing at an alarming rate.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned of unprecedented glacier melt and the looming global water crisis. Scientific evidence further confirms that the world is currently exceeding the critical 1.5°C warming threshold, with every additional fraction of a degree amplifying the risks to both living and non-living systems on Earth.
Consequently, there is an urgent need for collective action to minimize this overshoot, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and work assiduously towards restoring global temperatures to safer levels.
For decades, humanity has heard the climate story through warnings, targets, and distant deadlines. Unfortunately, meaningful action has often been delayed by distraction, denial, and in indecision.
Today, however, a different signal is emerging. Across the world, solar panels are transforming rooftops into sources of clean energy. Wind turbines are reshaping our horizons. Cities are being redesigned for sustainability and human wellbeing. Forest restoration initiatives are expanding, while innovative climate solutions continue to take root in communities across the globe.
The global theme for World Environment Day 2026, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future. #NowForClimate,” calls attention to the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the positive signals humanity must send back through deliberate and sustained action.
The Delta State Chapter of NIPR therefore calls on governments, institutions, corporate organisations, communities, and individuals to embrace environmentally responsible practices by:
- Reducing carbon emissions;
- Supporting renewable energy initiatives;
- Preserving and restoring forests and biodiversity;
- Promoting environmental sanitation and waste management;
- Encouraging tree planting and greening initiatives; and
- Adopting sustainable lifestyles that protect our shared environment.
To the good people of Delta State, this is a timely reminder that environmental stewardship begins with each of us. We must align with global best practices in environmental governance, cleanliness, beautification, conservation, and responsible management of our natural resources.
As Nigeria looks forward to hosting future global environmental engagements, we congratulate the Government and people of Azerbaijan, particularly the city of Baku, for hosting the global observance of World Environment Day 2026.
We also commend nations, corporate organisations, institutions, communities, and individuals across the world who continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and climate responsibility through progressive policies, innovative practices, and impactful actions that promote healthier, more resilient, and sustainable societies.
The future we desire depends on the actions we take today. Let us therefore be inspired by nature, inspired for climate, and inspired for our future.
