Before the campaigns officially began, the camp of Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei Esq FNSE, made a commitment to an issues-based approach to the 2027 Senatorial election. Between then and now, there has been no deviation from that commitment.
Our recent publications have placed Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei’s record as a legislator under scrutiny, presenting a largely accurate account of the projects he influenced during his 12 years in the Delta State House of Assembly. There are more than 50 interventions across education, roads, utilities, healthcare, empowerment and other areas.
For those who support Victor Ochei, the greatest source of confidence is not rhetoric, but the reality of a record that can be examined and challenged on its substance.
However, if we are to make fair and dispassionate comparisons between Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei and his opponent, H.E. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, then the comparison must be made within the limits of their respective responsibilities.
It would be unfair to place the achievements of a former governor and senator against those of a former House of Assembly member amd Former Speaker due to scope of service and resources available.
A more appropriate comparison would be to examine Dr. Okowa’s performance during his periods as Commissioner in Delta State.
Those portfolios included Water Resources, Agriculture and Health; all critical sectors at a time when the foundations of modern Delta State were being developed. Therefore, the questions should be straightforward:
Where are the lasting potable-water interventions or systems for which Dr. Okowa, as Commissioner for Water Resources, should be remembered?
What agricultural policy or intervention did he drive as Commissioner for Agriculture that positioned Delta State for sustained agricultural productivity, investment and job creation?
What enduring healthcare interventions from his tenure as Commissioner remain identifiable today as evidence of transformative impact?
These are not questions of personal attack.
As an Anioma son, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei does not sacrifice respect for elders on the platform of politics. These questions are therefore not directed from a place of disrespect, but are fitting questions for anyone who seeks the responsibility of representing millions of Anioma people at home and abroad.
Indeed, Rt. Hon. Ochei’s records are being revealed on a daily basis, without the fear of malicious scrutiny, disclaimers or corrections. They are records commensurate with the responsibilities he bore as the representative of the people of Aniocha North, as well as, records that provide a legitimate basis for asking what others achieved when entrusted with different responsibilities.
The 2027 contest deserves more than the usual political narratives. It demands dispassionate assessment, critical thinking and a willingness to examine evidence beyond party colours and familiar political claims.
The Holy Bible itself, reminds us of the importance of establishing matters with sound testimony and evidence and as the contest for Delta North gradually gathers momentum, the case for Victor Ochei deserves to be examined not merely as an aspiration, but against the evidence of what he has already done with responsibility.
For his opponent, the questions are now on the table. The records should provide the answers.
