Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has declared that supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta State are prepared to protect the votes of the party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, in the 2027 general election.
Omo-Agege spoke on Thursday at the inauguration of the NDC Delta State campaign secretariat in Asaba, where he also expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in the state.
The former senator said the conditions that influenced the strong support Obi received in Delta State during the 2023 presidential election had become more pronounced, citing challenges in electricity, employment and access to healthcare.
According to him, the prevailing circumstances have strengthened the resolve of many Deltans to support Obi’s presidential bid in 2027.
“Today, the things, the circumstances that threw up that vote have actually gotten worse. Our people no longer have power. Our people no longer have jobs. Our people no longer have hospitals to meet their medical needs, and so on and so forth,” Omo-Agege said.
He said the NDC’s supporters would go beyond voting for Obi by taking steps to protect the integrity of their votes.
“For that reason, we have resolved, Your Excellency, that not only are we going to stand to vote for you, we are going to stand to protect your vote,” he said.
Omo-Agege said the NDC’s objective was to provide the political support required to translate Obi’s proposed agenda into legislation, particularly through the election of NDC candidates to the National Assembly.
He expressed confidence that the party would secure Delta State’s three senatorial seats and a majority of the state’s House of Representatives seats in 2027.
“We are going to take the three Senate seats. We are going to take the three-over-three, and we are also going to win the majority of the House of Representatives seats on that day,” he said.
The former Deputy President of the Senate said such representation would enable elected NDC lawmakers from Delta State to work with Obi at the federal level if the party wins the presidency.
He also declared the support of the NDC leadership in Delta State for Deacon Chris Iyovwaye as the party’s candidate for governor.
“And here in Delta State, Your Excellency, we have equally resolved, despite what you may hear out there, we have resolved to make Deacon Chris Iyovwaye our next governor of Delta State,” Omo-Agege said.
He assured Obi that the NDC’s Delta structure would remain committed to the presidential campaign and the protection of the party’s votes.
The event was attended by NDC leaders, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders, including Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Chief Ominimini Ubiuwevbi and Mr Jimmy Idiovwa.
Obi, who formally inaugurated the campaign secretariat, apologised to supporters for the delay in his arrival, attributing it to an airline delay.
In his remarks, the NDC presidential candidate promised that a government under his leadership would focus on transparency, improved public services and ensuring that Nigerians could see the impact of the country’s resources.
Obi also criticised the state of infrastructure in the Niger Delta and specifically referred to the condition of the Warri-Asaba road.
He said his administration would discourage routine overseas medical treatment by government officials and strengthen healthcare institutions within Nigeria.
“We will change it because we are going to be transparent. We will tell you where every penny is going,” Obi said.
The opening of the Delta campaign secretariat marks the beginning of the NDC’s formal campaign mobilisation in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.
