Xabi Alonso has parted ways with Real Madrid after just over seven months as the head coach and been replaced by Álvaro Arbeloa.
A statement by the club disclosed that Alonso has gone “by mutual agreement”, just a day after a defeat by arch rivals Barcelona, in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday and with his team four points behind the Catalan club at the top of La Liga.
Arbeloa, also a former Madrid player, steps up from coaching the club’s B team, a job he took last June. He has been a coach in the Madrid set-up since since 2020, working with academy sides.
Alonso officially started on 1 June after a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won the domestic double in 2023-24 and led the team to the Europa League final. After overseeing Madrid’s run to the Club World Cup semi-finals he began impressively, winning 13 of his next 14 games, the exception being a heavy derby defeat by Atlético Madrid.
BREAKING: The reasons why Xabi Alonso was sacked:
- Poor physical preparation.
- Bad harmony with the players.
- Bad image in the Super Cup final against Barça.
It has also been widely reported that Xabi Alonso was NOT respected in training sessions:
- Some IMPORTANT players were STROLLING AROUND in training
- There were players who arrived at the last minute, finished the session, and left immediately
- Xabi Alonso, his assistant and his fitness coach all HAD to KEEP saying to some players to do gym work, pressing or tactical work
- It was even reported that Xabi had asked his Real Madrid players to form a guard of honour for Barcelona after losing in the Spanish Super Cup Final.
- But Kylian Mbappé said NO. The result? The players chose to listen to Mbappé over Alonso. His authority was effectively SHOT TO BITS after that.
