Rivers Assembly Speaker Threatens Mass Resignation Of Members Over Gov Fubara

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, has issued a stern warning that members of the Assembly are prepared to resign en masse if Governor Siminalayi Fubara is not removed from office.

Amaewhule made the declaration on Thursday while addressing the ongoing political crisis in the state, describing Governor Fubara as a serious threat to constitutional democracy. According to the Speaker, the actions and decisions of the governor have consistently undermined the rule of law and the authority of the legislature.

He dismissed widespread claims that the crisis is a personal or political feud between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Governor Fubara. Instead, Amaewhule stressed that the real issue lies between the governor and the Nigerian Constitution.

“This is not about Wike versus Fubara,” the Speaker said. “This is about a governor who has chosen to place himself above the constitution and undermine democratic institutions in Rivers State.”

Amaewhule maintained that lawmakers would not shy away from taking drastic steps, including resignation, if that becomes the only way to defend democracy and uphold constitutional governance in the state.

The development comes amid heightened tension in Rivers State, with the impeachment process against Governor Fubara already underway over allegations of gross misconduct.

Political observers say the Speaker’s statement signals a hardening of positions and may further escalate the crisis if urgent reconciliation efforts are not pursued.

As events continue to unfold, residents and stakeholders in Rivers State and beyond are watching closely to see how the standoff between the executive and legislative arms will be resolved.
