DELTA GOVT MOVES TO IMPROVE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY ACROSS THE STATE

The Delta State Government has intensified efforts to improve electricity generation and supply across the state.

In line with this objective, the Honourable Commissioner for Energy, Engr Michael Anoka FNSE, on Wednesday held a high-level strategic meeting with the management of Transcorp Power Limited PLC at the Ughelli Power Plant in Delta State, where he also carried out facility inspections.

Anoka said that the visit forms part of the state government’s ongoing fact finding and stakeholder engagement initiative aimed at assessing available power assets within Delta State and exploring practical frameworks for the benefit of Deltans.

The goal, according to the Honourable Commissioner, is to harness existing and improving generation capacity, to significantly enhance electricity supply for residents and businesses across the state in line with the vision of the state Governor His Excellency RT. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

Speaking during the meeting, Engr. Anoka said that stable electricity remains critical to industrialization, small and medium scale enterprise growth, job creation, and improved living standards.

He noted that the state government is committed to working with key power sector players to unlock the full potential of energy infrastructure located within Delta State.

The Transcorp Ughelli Power facility in Ughelli is one of the major power plants in the country with installed capacity of 900MW with investment plans of an additional 120MW, positioning the energy facility as a strategic asset capable of supplying electricity not only to the Ughelli and Isoko regions but to other parts of Delta State.

During the engagement, the Managing Director of Transcorp Power, Ughelli, Engr. Peter Ikenga, assured the Ministry of Energy of the company’s readiness to collaborate closely with the Delta State Government.

He said that with the right partnership framework and support, the Transcorp Ughelli Power Plant has the capacity to provide steady electricity supply beyond its immediate host communities.

According to him, enhanced cooperation could enable power delivery to key economic hubs within the state, including Asaba, the state capital, thereby boosting commercial activities and strengthening public infrastructure.

At the end of the meeting, the Ministry of Energy reaffirmed its commitment to sustained engagement with industry stakeholders as part of ongoing reforms aimed at ensuring that Delta State maximizes its energy potential for sustainable development.

The Commissioner and his team also visited the Transmission Company of Nigeria Delta Sub-Region in Ughelli, where they were received by Engr. Chukwuemeka Ken, the Assistant General Manager. The visit formed part of efforts to strengthen coordination, and explore all assets across the state.
