Omo-Agege debunks former associate’s claim, says it’s ridiculous attempt to weaponise personal decision
The Office of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President of the 9th Senate, has debunked the claim by a former political associate who in a recent social media video post claimed that he was neglected after the 2019 election.
Responding to the post where Ighoyohwo alleged that Omo-Agege failed to compensate him after working for his election into the senate, Sunny Areh, Media Adviser to the former Deputy President of the Senate, explained that like other political associates, Ighoyohwo was duly rewarded by Omo-Agege after he became the number two man in the upper legislative chamber. However, he resigned the appointment after he left Omo-Agege and APC to team up with the PDP in 2022.
“Mr. Ighoyohwo was appointed a Legislative Aide in the Office of the DSP. For the entire duration of his service, he received his salary and all statutory entitlements promptly and in full. There is no outstanding obligation to him”, Areh stated in a press release.
In a comprehensive response to Ighoyohwo’s narrative where he conceded that he worked for the PDP after he left Senator Omo-Agege, Areh stated:
“The Office of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has noted recent statements made in the media by Mr. Solomon Ighoyohwo. While we empathise with anyone going through difficult times, the claims made do not align with the facts. For the purpose of clarity, the record is hereby set straight:
“In 2019, during the APC campaign tour to Ethiope East Ward 5 in Oviorie, Mr. Ighoyohwo presented himself as the leader of a support group. Senator Omo-Agege, in keeping with his tradition of rewarding commitment, made commitments to him and to several other party supporters during that period.
“Following his election and emergence as Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Omo-Agege fulfilled that commitment. Mr. Ighoyohwo was appointed a Legislative Aide in the Office of the DSP. For the entire duration of his service, he received his salary and all statutory entitlements promptly and in full. There is no outstanding obligation to him.
“In 2022, Mr. Ighoyohwo voluntarily resigned his appointment as Legislative Aide and also resigned his membership of the APC to join the PDP. That decision was his alone, and it was respected without rancour.
“Mr. Ighoyohwo subsequently left with others to work for the PDP in the 2023 general election, campaigning alongside then-Governorship candidate Sheriff Oborevwori against Senator Omo-Agege. He has since followed Governor Oborevwori’s defection and now belongs to the APC. Whatever promises or arrangements were made to him within that political fold are matters between him and those he chose to work with — they have nothing whatsoever to do with Senator Omo-Agege.
“It is therefore untenable for Mr. Ighoyohwo, years later, to hold Senator Omo-Agege responsible for his present circumstances. Matters relating to appointment and welfare within the APC — the party he now belongs to, alongside Governor Oborevwori — are for the APC to address, not Senator Omo-Agege, who is now a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We note the timing and manner of these claims. This appears to be part of a recycled political smear intended to distract from real issues and drag the Senator’s name into matters that do not concern him. Mr. Ighoyohwo deserves better than to be used as a tool in this manner.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Omo-Agege owes Mr. Ighoyohwo nothing. All obligations owed to him were fully discharged while he served in this Office. Any expectations arising from his later political alliances are theirs to answer for, not the Senator’s. The Senator bears him no ill will and wishes him well.
“The Senator’s focus remains his campaign for the Delta Central Senatorial District on the platform of the NDC, and his commitment to the service of the people of Delta Central, Delta State, and Nigeria. We urge the public and the media not to lend credence to attempts to weaponise personal decisions for political gain”, Areh stated.
