In a major development in the Nigerian political landscape, the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reportedly cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan officially, via a waiver for the party’s presidential primary.
Former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, a member of the screening committee, announced the clearance in Abuja after the exercise. Jonathan was treated as the sole or lone presidential aspirant being screened, despite not submitting his nomination form earlier as expected.
In summary, the Kabiru Turaki faction of the people’s Democratic party (PDP) says it has waived screening requirements for the former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.
Babangida Aliyu, former governor of Niger state and member of the PDP screening committee, spoke on Tuesday in Abuja.
Also the party says that Goodluck Jonathan has also purchased his presidential nomination form ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former president has yet to publicly declare his intention to run for president in 2027 which has cast doubt in the veracity of the claims coming from the Turaki faction of the PDP.
If these claims are true, does it mean that Goodluck Jonathan is going to contest as president in 2027.
This move comes amid deep PDP factional battles (Turaki vs Wike-backed blocs), with the party apparently zoning the ticket South and positioning Jonathan as a potential unifying or comeback figure. Multiple reports from Daily Post, TheCable, Arise News, and Vanguard confirm the screening happened Tuesday, May 19, 2026, with Jonathan emerging as the key name.
