DELTA GOVERNMENT STEPS UP POWER DRIVE, VISITS OKPAI POWER PLANT

The Delta State Government is taking stronger steps to ensure stable electricity supply across the state by exploring options to utilize available power assets and strengthen the supply chain, demonstrating a clear commitment through decisive action.

On Monday, the Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Michael Anoka FNSE and his team, visited the Okpai Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state.

Anoka said that the visit follows a direct order from His Excellency the Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, to quickly find and use every possible solution to improve and provide reliable power supply for the people of Delta State.

The Honourable Commissioner said the government is focusing on making full use of existing power facilities, especially the Okpai Power Plant, and others in the state.

He further noted that at the moment, the Okpai IPP produces about 480 megawatts of electricity. With the second phase of the project, he disclosed that an extra 450 megawatts will be added to supply grid, bringing the total to about 930 megawatts. This he said the state government will tap into to greatly improve electricity supply in the state.

Anoka also mentioned an earlier meeting on April 8, where he said the governor received a presentation from the Group Managing Director of Power Acumen Consulting Limited, exploring practical ways to achieve steady power in the state.

“Since then, the Ministry of Energy has also received additional proposals from different investors who are ready to support the plan.”

During the visit, the team was welcomed by Engr. Enebeli Francis, who confirmed the plant’s current output and the expansion work.

Anoka further explained that the governor has a clear vision to make Delta State one of the first states in Nigeria to achieve a truly electrified economy. This, he said, will help boost economic activities, attract industries, create jobs, and improve the overall standard of living for residents.

He assured Deltans that the government is not just making promises but working hard to deliver results.

“The goal is to harness existing power assets to improve supply capacity, in order to provide reliable electricity that will support businesses, drive industrial growth, and enhance the quality of daily life of residents across the state.”

“These visits to the various power plants in the state shows that Delta State is moving forward with real action toward stable power supply and a stronger, more industrialized economy, in line with the mandate and vision of His Excellency the Governor,” Anoka said.
