Sir Itiako Ikpokpo (Malik)
Popularly known as Malik, Sir Itiako Ikpokpo by divine will, is a quintessential Nigerian.
A native of Uro in Irri Kingdom, Isoko South Local Governement Area, Delta State, he was born in the Yoruba Community of Odogbolu, Ogun State, where he had his Primary School Education.
He proceeded to Federal Government College, Azare, Bauchi State, and later Federal Government College, Idoani, Ondo State, for his Secondary education, from where he got admission into the University of Port Harcourt to obtain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and International Relations.
While at UNIPORT, he was known to be versatile, not only in academics, but also in social activitism. This earned him election as President of the Student Union Government.
Having criss-crossed all parts of Nigeria in the course of education, business, politics and public service, he not only developed a flair for languages, speaking his native Isoko, Yoruba, Hausa and English languages, fluently, but also made great friends and associates across all nooks and cranny of the nation.
Naturally given to self determination, Ikpokpo went straight into private business upon graduation, growing a decent business empire that now provides employs hundreds of people.
His investments on the stable of DUNAMIS-ICON LIMITED stretch from transportation to hospitality and catering services, business consultancy, farming, and sports management.
In 2014, he was elected Executive Chairman of Isoko South Local Governement Area, and he became the first Chairman to serve two terms, completing in 2021.
In the course of his local government chairmanship, he was elected the Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON.
His meritorious service as Local Government Chairman, contributions to the growth of ALGON, and erudite advocacies for local government reforms, not only earned him the appellation of “General Malik” across the nation but also the appointment by the National Executive Committee of ALGON as the Director General, the Administrator and Chief Executive Officer, of the National Secretariat, which entailed managing the affairs of all 774 local governments across the country.
Sir Ikpokpo came into sports first as an enthusiast and philanthropist, providing financial support for numerous athletes under the charge of his political mentor, Chief Solomon Ogba, who was Delta State Sports Administrator, Commissioner, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, and now 1st Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
Leveraging on his elections as a Local Government Chairman, and also of Delta State ALGON, he introduced the first ever Delta State Local Governments Sports Festival which converged sportsmen from the 25 councils.
The essence was to deepen sports in the grassroots for wider and sustainable talents discovery, as well as to inspire the local government councils into developing the culture of investing in sports.
As Director General of ALGON, he worked on the possibility of extending the same drive through the 774 local government councils before he left office.
Still committed to the vision of deepening grassroots sports development he, in 2025, launched the Niger Delta Sports Festival, now reputed as the largest talent discovery platform, the best organised sports event, and the biggest private sector driven regional multi sports youth competition not just in Nigeria but in the African continent.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, declared him the biggest sports marketer currently in Nigeria, while he also declared the 2nd Niger Delta Games the cleanest sports competition held in Nigeria in recent times.
