In a landmark military transition that captured the admiration of colleagues, community leaders and patriotic Nigerians alike, Major-General Raymond Nkemakonam Ochei (rtd) officially bowed out of active service in the Nigerian Army with a ceremony steeped in tradition, honour and celebration of an exemplary career.
The historic pulling-out parade, held at the Nigerian Army School of Signals Parade Ground in Apapa, Lagos, was marked by full military pomp and pageantry — showcasing regimental precision, ceremonial honours, and deep respect for one of the Army’s most distinguished officers.
At the heart of the event was the symbolic ritual in which Maj. Gen. Ochei, accompanied by his wife, Dr. Doris Ochei, was ceremonially carried out of the barracks on an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) — a timeless symbol of an honourable transition from a life of service to retirement.
Born in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, General Ochei’s career spanned more than three decades of dedicated service, marked by a rare blend of battlefield leadership, academic excellence, and professional stewardship — including significant roles in military finance and administration.

Throughout his tenure, he earned a reputation as a soldier-scholar and mentor, combining strategic acumen with deep commitment to institutional integrity, fiscal accountability, and the development of junior officers. His work as Registrar of the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration was particularly lauded for shaping the next generation of military accountants and strengthening institutional fiscal discipline.
The retirement has not only drawn applause from within Nigerian Army circles but also from civic leaders and national stakeholders. Organisations such as the Silent Heroes Awards Initiative, the Anioma Trust Newspapers, etc, recognised General Ochei’s service as emblematic of patriotism, selflessness and a legacy of community upliftment, citing his service and post-service philanthropy and mentorship in his Delta State homeland and beyond.
Tributes have poured in from across the country, celebrating not just his military accomplishments but also his enduring contributions to peacebuilding, leadership integrity and community development.
As he steps into retirement, Major-General Ochei leaves behind a legacy of discipline and duty — transitioning from uniformed service to a life of continued influence through mentorship and philanthropy, a fitting close to a grand chapter in the annals of Nigeria’s armed forces.
