Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has reportedly passed on, after suddenly collapsing in his Government House office today, Thursday, December 11. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, immediately after the collapse and later died in the hospital, following a dramatic medical emergency that has sent shockwaves through the state’s political class and general public.
According to multiple reliable sources, the deputy governor, a veteran politician and second-highest official in the Bayelsa State government, was attending to official duties at the Government House around 1:30 p.m. when he suddenly slumped, prompting an immediate emergency response from his aides and security personnel. Eyewitnesses described a scene of alarm among staff as they quickly moved him to an awaiting official vehicle and rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa for urgent treatment.
At the hospital, Ewhrudjakpo was admitted through the emergency unit and attended to by medical professionals. While a number of initial reports suggested he had been stabilized and was receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), family and hospital sources later confirmed that he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, despite efforts to save his life.
Eyewitness accounts and hospital-based information indicated that the deputy governor appeared to be in serious condition when he was brought in, triggering a heightened response from medical staff, senior government officials, and security operatives who cordoned off the hospital premises.
While authorities are yet to issue an official government statement, sources close to his team noted that Ewhrudjakpo had maintained a demanding work schedule , long known among colleagues, which they speculated may have contributed to his sudden health crisis. Some unverified reports have suggested a possible cardiac-related issue as a trigger for the collapse, though no formal medical cause has been confirmed at this time.
Top political figures from across the state and federal government, including lawmakers, party officials, and clergy, have been reported to be visiting the medical centre to pay respects and offer condolences to family members and aides.
Ewhrudjakpo, born on September 5, 1965 had been serving as Bayelsa State’s deputy governor since February 2020 alongside Governor Douye Diri , playing a key role in the state’s administration and policy development.
As news of his death spreads, tributes are already pouring in from political colleagues, supporters, and citizens, remembering him as a committed public servant whose loss is deeply felt across the Niger Delta region.
